OpenAI's historic math solution overshadowed by credit controversy (axios.com)
OpenAI says its AI has solved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem, a potentially historic breakthrough shadowed by questions over unpublished research by outside mathematicians. Why it matters: The controversy strikes at a core trust question for AI-assisted science: whether researchers can safely use frontier labs' tools to work on unpublished discoveries. State of play: OpenAI said Tuesday an internal model "significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra" produced a proof that the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations can develop a singularity in finite time. The company says the effort began Sept. 1, after OpenAI researchers heard rumors that two Millennium Prize problems had been solved and launched its new internal model at the remaining problems. OpenAI says roughly 10,000 concurrent agents worked on the Navier–Stokes effort, reaching the result in about 88 hours. On a call with reporters, OpenAI executives said they devoted enormous computing power to the effort, putting the cost of solving the problem in the "millions of dollars." Friction point: NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge had been working on closely related fluid-dynamics research. Buckmaster has publicly questioned whether OpenAI raced down a research direction it learned about from their work and raised concerns about whether private Codex material could have played a role. OpenAI says neither its researchers nor its agents saw any of Buckmaster and Alpöge's work before the pair released it publicly. The company acknowledged, however, that the two teams were pursuing related lines of research rooted in the same earlier work. What they're saying: "Now that we can see their work, the approaches appear to be different," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X. Altman admitted OpenAI launched the effort after hearing rumors that Anthropic's models had solved a major math problem: "We were curious if ours could do it too." OpenAI's policies prohibit training on data from paying enterprise customers, while consumer users can opt out of having their data used for training. "No people or AI systems searched through user data to solve this problem," OpenAI chief research officer Mark Chen said on the call. "I'm a little disappointed with the allegations." An AI safety researcher told Axios they would be surprised if OpenAI had violated its policies. The intrigue: The dispute erupted as OpenAI is confronting broader questions about how quickly to push the capabilities of its most advanced models. OpenAI's chief scientist, who recently warned about the risks of rapidly scaling AI, said on the call that the company had "paused a lot" of frontier training after discovering the cyber capabilities of its latest models. OpenAI says it does not intend to claim the $1 million Millennium Prize, instead framing the result as evidence of how quickly its most advanced systems are improving.
